The painter and graphic artist József Szurcsik was born on March 3, 1959 in Budapest, in a family of artists. His father, János Szurcsik (1931), is a Munkácsy Prize-winning artist and painter, and his mother, Anna Sárkány, is a tapestry artist. His wife, art historian Erika Molnár; he has three children: Erika, Benedek and Kristóf. Lives in Budapest. Between 1981 and 1985, then between 1985 and 1988, he completed the reproduction of graphics at the Hungarian College of Fine Arts in Budapest and took part in the postgraduate training of the college. He has been an exhibiting artist since 1985. In addition to his autonomous artistic activity, he also carries out a wide range of art organizing and representation activities: he is a member and official of many domestic and international art organizations and societies. The other important field of activity is art pedagogy: between 2006 and 2009 he was a teacher at the Károly Eszterházy College in Eger and the head of the Department of Visual Arts, and since 2009 he has been teaching at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts in Budapest. Between 2014 and 2016, he was Deputy Rector for Education at the University, currently Head of the Department of Graphics, Associate Professor. Initially, he was active as a graphic artist and illustrator, then his work using unique and reproducing graphic techniques was replaced by painting compositions, but as a participant in other fields, such as creative and performance and orchestral formations (Art-Reaktor, Experienced Brushes). He also performs. Since the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, he has been appearing regularly in solo exhibitions with his own stylistic features, as well as in domestic and foreign thematic exhibitions and group presentations of Hungarian fine art. Numerous awards and scholarships are hallmarks of his work, and many of his works have been featured in prestigious public collections. His art and performances were accompanied by a lively critical response, and many articles and studies analyze his work. In 2014, a small monograph analyzing his art, written by Judit Szeifert, was published in the HUNGART book series.
